East Canje businessman and wife robbed while entering yard

A Berbice businessman and his wife were robbed on Friday evening while entering their yard at Fort Ordnance Housing Scheme, East Canje, Berbice.

Around 7.45 pm on Friday, two men armed with handguns attacked Danny Sankar, 58, and his wife, Nanda Ramkissoon, 40, who reside at Lot 588 Fort Ordnance Housing Scheme, East Canje, Berbice.

The couple operate shop next to the New Amsterdam Market.

According to information gathered, Sankar and his wife left their businesses around 7.10 pm to head home. However, after arriving at their gate they both exited their car, PNN 7220, to open their gate when the suspects pounced on them.

Stabroek News was told that after realizing that the two victims did not have any valuables other than their jewellery in their possession, the robbers grabbed their jewellery then jumped into the couple’s car and sped off.

As a result, in addition to a gold chain, valued $120,000, and two gold rings, valued $110,000, the robbers carted off a large quantity of cash, five cellphones valued at over $200,000 in total, and a quantity of Digicel and GTT phone cards,.

The cash, phones, and phone cards were all in the vehicle.

The police were immediately contacted. They later found the vehicle a few streets away from the scene of the crime.
