THE COMMA The comma is used:-

● to separate items in a series.

e.g., I had bread, scrambled eggs, cheese, cereal and milk for breakfast. ● after introductory words such as yes, no, oh and well. (If not exclaimed)

e.g., Yes, I would like to go.

● to separate a noun or noun phrase which adds meaning to the noun just mentioned. e.g., Mr. Bobb , the barber took twenty five minutes to cut my hair.

● to separate adjectives when they are more than one describing a noun.

e.g., Grandma is loving, kind, caring and humorous.

● to separate adverbs which add meaning to the same verb. e.g., My cousin recited the poem clearly, fluently and expressively to the audience.

● To separate a prepositional phrase when it begins a sentence.

e.g., Under the shady tree, rested the tired gardener.

● in direct speech to separate the spoken from unspoken words where no full stop, question mark or exclamation mark is used. e.g., “We had an enjoyable day at the park,” said Kim to her friend.

● to separate the name of a person who is directly spoken to.

e.g.,” Why are you crying, Sarah?” asked Mom.

● to separate items in dates and addresses. e.g., On Tuesday, October 13, 2020, at Anna Regina, Essequibo Coast, twins were born to Mary and Robert Persaud.
