Grade Six Science

Hello Boys and Girls,

How was your time at school so far? Have you made new friends? Do you have a new teacher? Have you started learning exciting things?

Welcome to a brand-new term! It is the beginning of a new school year, and it is your last year at the primary level. Welcome also to Grade Six Science in these education pages of our newspapers. We will have lots of fun and excitement as we investigate, explore, discover, question, discuss, observe, draw, label, experiment and research together. We will find out about different topics in science and will work hard towards success in our NGSA in 2023. (What do the letters, NGSA stand for?)

You are all budding little scientists in your own right, so let’s remember as you begin your journey to use your senses. Which senses will you use? Let’s check on how we will be as scientists. ● Be curious

● Be observant (involves using your eyes,

ears and other senses)

● Be a problem solver

● Be innovative (think outside the box)

● Be creative

● Be open minded

● Be a critical thinker (question things)

● Be persistent (keep at it)

● Pay careful attention to detail ● Communicate (especially with your peers) ● Document (make notes of what you find

out)

These points above help you to be a good scientist.

Read the poem below to get a better insight into what a scientist really is all about. Enjoy.

Thinking Like a Scientist

I want to think like a scientist observing animals, earth or sky,

I want to ask good questions wondering how and what and why.

I want to make smart guesses, hypothesising what might happen and when

I want to do cool experiments, testing my thinking again and again.

I want to write up all my data, recording pictures, charts or words.

I want to think through all I’ve done, drawing conclusions about what I’ve learned.

Wondering, asking, testing, concluding, this is what scientists do.

If you want to think like a scientist then you must do them, too.

Jenele Hanson

Oh yes! You are indeed little scientists! Share this poem with your friends at school.

Now what really is Science? Write your own definition of what you think Science is. Ask a few persons to tell you what they think Science is all about.

You received many different answers, right? Let’s look at a simple operational definition of Science.

Read the poem below to find out more about what Science is.

That’s Science

When you ask….

Why are babies born so small?

Where are their teeth and hair and all?

What makes them want to suck their thumb? Why can’t they walk, and jump and run? That’s science

When you see…

That flowers don’t grow when it snows,

That all kites need a wind that blows,

Some birds are red, some blue, some brown, And a wheel to roll must be round.

That’s science.

When you wonder…

Why are robins’ eggs so blue? Do people lay eggs as they do? If birds can fly and people can’t, Why can’t a dog or a cat, or ant? That’s science. - E. Smith

Did you enjoy that poem too? It sets you thinking even more, doesn’t it? Science helps us to find out so many things. It involves, as we mentioned before, searching, asking questions, exploring, observing, documenting, analyzing, measuring,… and we can go on and on. Science is indeed fun. It is Science and Technology that have been enabling all the latest developments that we see today including mobile phones, tablets, cures for illnesses and so on. In this modern day it is important to do Science to develop and to be up-to-date. We can’t be left behind.

If we look at it more formally, we find that the study of Science attempts to give order to our world. It finds patterns that are related through the use of several skills and techniques and thought processes.

Let’s now get to what we will be doing. We will be looking at many topics in Science from now to the end of your time in this class. Some of these are:

Animal Kingdom

Plant Kingdom

Solar System

Simple Machines

Weather and Weather Instruments Body Systems

Matter

Environment

Forests

Energy

Food

Diseases

We are sure to have lots of fun!

Do ensure that you have a scrap book as we will be pasting and cutting, drawing and labelling, circling and underlining, jotting down ideas and so on. Prepare to have lots of fun and to learn lots of things at the same time. Let’s strive to be successful in all that we do.

Here are some secrets of success:

● Pay close attention to your teacher.

● Take great care in your work (Carelessness

can lead to disaster!)

● Correct all mistakes made. Learn from your

mistakes.

● Revise constantly. That cannot be overemphasised!)

● Do your homework. There are so many

benefits.

● Think/reflect about everything you are

learning/doing.

● Apply what you have learnt.

Do remember that we learn through

● the use of your senses – hearing, seeing,

tasting, feeling, smelling

● reading

● research

● experimenting

● asking questions

● discussion, and other ways that you can

explore.

Make the best use of these methods. We can also learn in a virtual environment.

In this new year of Grade Six we will learn as much as you can and you must ensure that you do all of the exciting activities that are given.

Have fun completing the wordsearch below. Find the words which follow: exciting, investigate, new, science, scientist, research, explore, ears, ask, questions, experiment, homework, think, success, fun, keen

Next week, DV, we will begin our investigation of living things.

Until then have another great week of school! Goodbye, Boys and Girls!
