Barnwell (114), Nedd (7-33) give DCC 301-run first innings lead over Everest

A century from Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) captain Christopher Barnwell followed up by a seven-wicket haul from Ashmead Nedd left Everest Cricket Club reeling at the end of the opening day of their Georgetown Cricket Association’s GISE/Star Rentals/Trophy Stall first-division two-day contest.

Yesterday at DCC, the hosts won the toss and elected to bat first, piling up 381 for nine after 79 overs. By stumps, Everest were 80 all after 29 overs, still 301 runs behind.

Barnwell struck 13 sixes, two which were consecutively hit over long on and extra cover off of Nityanand Mathura and three fours during his 61-ball onslaught as he coasted to 114. The former West Indies all-rounder added 112 for the fifth wicket with Nkosi Beaton who raced to 45 from 36 balls, striking two sixes and five boundaries before both batsmen were dismissed in the 49th over by Mathura.

Earlier, Barnwell also shared in a 69run partnership for the fourth wicket with Shamar Yearwood who made 26 from 28 balls. A 60-run, ninth-wicket stand between Dexter George and Ricardo Percival also helped DCC reach the massive first innings total.

George worked his way to 47 not out from 34 balls, his innings featuring five fours and a six while Percival was stumped for 34 from 84 balls having hit seven boundaries.

Raymond Perez chipped in with 38 from 50 balls before being caught and bowled by Mathura after sharing in a 55run union with Brandon Jaikaran who made 33 from 89 balls. Mathura ended with 5-126 with Jadon Campbell being one of his victims for 16. Niron Bissu and Travis Mohammed took two wickets each.

When Everest batted, it was all over to

Nedd who picked up his best bowling figures in first-division cricket of 8-33 from 15 overs. The left-arm spinner was virtually unplayable in home conditions, ripping through the order with ease including the wicket of Anthony Sanichar who top scored with 22 from 39 balls. Bissu made 12 and Chandrapaul Hemraj made 11 but no other batsman could reach double figures. Barnwell and Beaton picked up one wicket each.
