Accused in bike theft remanded after avoiding court

A man accused of stealing a motorcycle was refused bail yesterday after police say he evaded the court for six months.

Andrew Newyear, 23, of Lot 406 ‘D’ Field, Sophia, was brought before Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus, who appeared virtually at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, the charged was read.

Newyear denied that on April 9, at Plum Park, Sophia, while being in the company of another, he stole a motorcycle, valued $240,000, which was the property of Gregory Short.

Police Prosecutor Annalisa Brummell told the court that the matter had been called several times at the court but the man never appeared. She said that a summons was later issued as well as an arrest warrant. However after those proved futile, in July, a Magistrate struck out the matter.

A police rank later saw the man traveling and arrested him. He was then brought before the court.

Newyear, a construction worker, told the court that when he was first arrested by the police he had been placed on $20,000 station bail after being taken to the Brickdam Police Station then the Prashad Nagar Police Outpost.

Prosecutor Brummell indicated that the man did not return to the police after being released on station

bail. She objected to him being placed on bail and said that she is of the opinion that he would not return to court.

As a result, Newyear was denied bail and told that the matter will be called again on November 1.
