Over 100 persons in Wakapau Vaccinated

Over 100 persons living in the Amerindian Community of Wakapau in Region Two were vaccinated on Friday. This was disclosed by Regional Health Officer Dr. Ranjeev Singh. Singh said that persons were vaccinated against the Corona Virus in the community. Amongst the vaccinated persons were school children as well.

Food hampers were taken those families that are currently in Home Isolation. Dr. Singh said that the vaccination team will revisit the community to ensure that more persons receive vaccines.

Before this visit, a team had recently visited the community and several sanitation products were taken to the Wakapau Amerindian community

Wakapoa Amerindian community is among several Covid-19 hotspot communities in Guyana. The community has approximately 59 persons that are currently infected. This figure was revealed by Dr. Frank Anthony during his COVID-19 update Monday last. Apart from the 59 active cases, 39 patients are currently asymptomatic and one patient is currently critical.

After the disclosure, a Team from the Regional Health Services and the Regional Rapid Response Team were deployed to the area. The team was Headed by Regional Health Officer Dr. Ranjeev Singh.

Health talks and discussions were held with community health workers and members of the Wakapoa Village Council. Fifteen families that are currently in home isolation as was given food hampers.

In addition to that 5 cases of hand sanitizers, 12 cases of bleach, and 2000 face masks were handed over to the Toshoa of the Amerindian community Lloyd Perriera.

Dr. Singh said that as soon as the cases are recovered a vaccination team will visit the area to ensure that persons are immunized. Dr. Singh emphasized the need for persons in the community to ensure that they observed all the Covid-19 guidelines and for the village council to ensure that those infected persons that are in Home Isolation are observing the rules and as not coming out.

“Increase of testing”

Dr. Singh also disclosed that testing for the Covid-19 virus has been increased in the village. During the visit handing over of 100 testing kits (PCR) and personal protective equipment were handed over to the Community Health Worker to increase testing in the area. The areas currently affected are Myrie and Curimero.

Toshoa of the Amerindian community Lloyd Perriera said that his council is currently distributing the sanitation products and also frequent calls are made

to those families that are currently in Home Isolation. He also said residents within the community are advised to take the Covid-19 vaccine. At the moment all sporting activities, churches are closed in the area. The boat system is only working

Monday to Friday. These measures were taken by Wakapau Village Council and the Regional Task Force took to ensure that there is a decrease of cases in the Region. To date, 59% of the adult population is fully immunized.
