Chess Olympiad team meets His Excellency Irfaan Ali

—`It was beyond our expectations’ — said GCF President Frankie Farley of meeting with Head-Of-State

His Excellency Dr Irfaan Ali yesterday morning met with the members of the Guyana Chess Federation’s (GCF) team to this month’s Chess Olympiad in India and some executive members of the GCF.

According to the GCF President, Frankie Farley, there was significant progress made in terms of collaboration among the government, the National Sports Commission (NSC) which was represented by Minister of Sport, Charles Ramson Jnr., and the GCF.

Farley said the Head-of-State promised lots of support adding that the GCF will be rolling out, along with the NSC, a number of unique initiatives.

“Additionally, the NSC has also earmarked a lot of programmes some of which will be linked to the regions and which mirrors our constitution of the regional architecture in spreading chess with respect to moving the game forward,” Farley added.

Farley said he was given the assurance that the NSC will aggressively help with the programmes.

The GCF has also been promised funding from a number of different sources to help in case of any shortfall in the cost of the Guyana team attending the Olympiad, said Farley.

“Based on his commitment, we should be okay for the Olympiad, the entire team going forward,” he added.

Farley also disclosed that President Ali has promised to make a significant contribution to the purchase of equipment in the form of electronic and a number of regular boards and pieces which will be used to spread the game to all the regions and some under-served areas.

Of the discussions with the Head of-State and the outcome Farley said: “It was beyond our expectations.”
