How dire a situation is when a teacher must arm herself for her own protection?

Dear Editor, Sincerely, Yannason Duncan.

Once there is a repeat of any incident without that issue being resolved, there would be many more repeats and this is what we are seeing in our school system. Imagine how dire a situation is when a teacher have to arm herself with a cutlass to protect herself from a parent and a student. Look at where we are heading. That could have never happened in my days. In those days, respect was the key word. No boy or girl dare raise their hands to hit any teacher, much less to threaten them. Times have drastically changed and from my projection, if we don’t get it right now, things are going to get worst.

No parent should walk into a school and attack a teacher. They are ways and means to approach an issue and that should always be, irrespective of what the student or teacher did. Sit and discuss the situation like adults and then move on. Editor, we must remember that the teacher already have an education and if parents believe in assaulting and beating up teachers whenever their children lodge a complaint, they too need to go back to school.

Editor, what transpired at the Houston Secondary (Thursday) could have ended up worse but thank God nothing of the sort happened. Minister of Education Priya Manickchand you have a lot of workshops in this department. It is time to work and less talk. You need to get down to work to address these incidents which are now brewing into a trend. Strategize and come up with workable plans to put a complete dent into this disgusting issue. Our teachers deserve to be treated with the utmost respect.
