Pereira, Munoz win men, women’s singles

— Central American and Caribbean Qualifiers

Cuba’s Andy Pereira and the Dominican Republic’s Shary Munoz won the men and women’s singles as the qualifying event for the Central American and Caribbean Games came to an end Wednesday at the National Gymnasium.

Southpaw Pereira, who was impressive throughout the tournament defeated Puerto Rico’s Daniel Gonzale 4-0 in the men’s final while Munoz defeated Melanie Diaz 4-2 in the final of the women’s singles.

In the men’s semi-finals Pereira defeated Puerto Rico’s Oscar Birriel 4-0 while Gonzalez stopped Puerto Rico’s Angel Naranjo 4-2.

Guyana’s Shemar Britton lost 0-4 to Gonzalez in the round of 16.

In the women’s singles semifinals Munoz defeated Cuba’s Idalys Lovet 4-3 while Diaz got the better of the Dominican Republic’s Eva Brito 4-1.

Guyana’s Jasmin Billingy lost 0-4 to Brito in the round of 16 while Thuraia Thomas also lost 04 to Diaz in their round of 16 encounter.

The men’s doubles final was won by Pereira and Jorge Campos of Cuba who defeated Puerto Rico’s Naranjo/Birriel 3-2.

Guyana’s Shemar Britton and Jonathan Van Lange lost to Cuba’s Livan Martinez and Adrian Perez 2-3 in the quarterfinals.

The women’s doubles was won by Daniela Fonseca-Carrazana and Lovet who defeated Melanie Diaz and Daniely Rios 3-1.

In the semifinals Diaz and Rios defeated the Dominican Republic’s Yasiris Ortiz and Munoz 30 while Fonseca and Lovet defeated Brianna Burgos and Kristal Melendez 3-0 of Puerto Rico.

Guyana’s Chelsea Edghill and Natalie Cummings were eliminated 2-3 by Munoz and Ortis in the quarterfinals

The mixed doubles title was won by Gonzalez and Diaz who defeated Campos and Fonseca 3-0.
